Local Life in Andaman
Most of us can only imagine what it will be to wake up every day to the most amazing sunrises and end the day to fabulous sunsets. After all, don’t we all want life to be a beach vacation! As amazing as it may sound, that is “normal” for anyone who has experienced Andaman local life.
About the people
The earliest inhabitants in free Andaman were the released prisoners of the Cellular Jail and traders. Eventually, with government assistance, people from other parts of India moved in. Andaman is typically called a mini-India. You’ll find people from almost all Indian cultures residing here. You will have no problem conversing in English or Hindi but if you are from India, chances are you may run into a local who speaks your mother tongue too!
Locals v/s Tribals
Thanks to select documentaries aired by the media, many believe that Andaman is only home to the tribals. While typical tribals do exist in Andaman even today, they live in protected areas.
Weather all year round
Andaman enjoys a tropical climate – hot and wet most of the year. That being said, it offers you more than what most beach destinations have. So carry ample sun block and the occasional umbrella when the time comes
Local Food
It goes without saying that the beach front allows plenty of options in sea food but what is exciting about Andaman is that it is a melting pot of Indian cultures and you are likely to find multiple food influences throughout the island. For example Andaman Holidays recommends you definitely stop by at the Annapurna Cafeteria to try the Chilli Idy and Idly Manchurian!
Here is the crazy part – just because you live in one of the best holiday destinations in the world doesn’t mean you don’t take a vacation. People in Andaman do for a vacation to other non-beach places in India and beyond!
